Boycott the Bottle is a student group at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) that seeks to create awareness on the environmental, health, and social issues involving the purchase and consumption of bottled water. This website is not limited only to students from UOIT, it is our goal to raise the general awareness of the public and we feel that everyone can benefit from the information provided on this website.
A major purpose of Boycott the
Bottle is to reduce the consumption of bottled water. In 2005 alone Canadians
consumed approximately 1.3 billion litres of bottled water. We feel that
it is important for the public to understand that bottled water is not any purer
than tap water. As a matter of fact in some cases it may even be more toxic. Check
out our fast facts page to see how bottled water can be harmful to your health.
In any case, it is plain and simple;
we are paying 240-10,000 times more for bottled water than tap water when we
are blessed to be living in a country with such a vast amount of available
fresh water. Ontario
itself contains one third of the world’s fresh water supply in and along its
borders. In addition, Ontario
also has a highly regulated system for providing tap water. You can read more
about Ontario’s
drinking water here.
